‘Just Keep My Baby Safe’: Fort Worth Family Recovers From Bullying
In the eyes of the state, a failing school has consistently low academic performance. For parents LaToya Thomas and Jasmin Pierson, their school, Mitchell Boulevard Elementary, failed them when officials neglected to notify them that their daughter was being bullied.
Mitchell Boulevard has been on the state’s “Improvement Required” list for three consecutive years. To turn the school around, the Fort Worth school district this year designated Mitchell Boulevard as a “leadership academy,” hiring new administrators.
Thomas says their daughter has a better teacher this year and a smaller classroom. The couple hopes the changes made at Mitchell Boulevard create a better environment for their kids.
“Just keep my baby safe and send them back to me the same way I gave them to you this morning,” Thomas said. “No problem can be fixed overnight, but as long as I see change, I’m fine.”
