{"id":9,"date":"2015-01-21T16:50:43","date_gmt":"2015-01-21T16:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/broken-hip\/?p=9"},"modified":"2016-02-23T22:40:14","modified_gmt":"2016-02-23T22:40:14","slug":"the-fast-decline-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stories.kera.org\/the-broken-hip\/2015\/01\/21\/the-fast-decline-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fast Decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Last October, Jeanette Mariani was an independent 87-year-old living alone in Dallas and getting around with a walker.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then, one night, she switched off the light and tried to make her way into bed.<\/p>\n<p>A chair was in the way. She fell.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There I was, laying on the floor,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pulled down one of my pillows. I didn\u2019t reach very high, just pulled it down, put my head down on it and thought: \u2018Well, I\u2019ll wait until morning.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next day, she called for help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s every [person&#8217;s] nightmare,\u201d said her daughter, Janet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother lays on the floor all night and doesn\u2019t press her button,\u201d Janet said. She laughed. \u201cMy mother just doesn\u2019t inconvenience others. She thinks about others before she thinks about herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>A chain reaction<\/h4>\n<p>A fall from a chair or a bed may not seem like a death sentence &#8212; but, for an older person, it can be.<\/p>\n<p>Falls are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/homeandrecreationalsafety\/falls\/adultfalls.html\" target=\"_blank\">leading cause of death<\/a> from an injury for older Americans. One of every five people who breaks a hip after age 50 dies within a year.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 512px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-9-1\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/broken-hip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/01\/jeanette_mariani.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/broken-hip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/01\/jeanette_mariani.mp4\">http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/broken-hip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/01\/jeanette_mariani.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>For women, it&#8217;s especially bad. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/HomeandRecreationalSafety\/Falls\/adulthipfx.html\" target=\"_blank\">Three quarters of those with hip fractures are women.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And for many, the broken hip starts a chain reaction &#8212; usually because older people also suffer from underlying conditions, which can complicate recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Every moment counts after a fall, says Dr. Amy Moss, an assistant professor of geriatrics at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.unthsc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re bedridden or hospitalized, your odds of developing everything from bed sores to pneumonia increase dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that delaying surgery after a fracture for just 24 hours increases the chance of complications, and death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most common scenario is they die of pneumonia after a hip fracture,\u201d Moss says. \u201cAnd even though we know that, many patients will succumb to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>&#8216;I knew that she was going to decline&#8217;<\/h4>\n<p>Last November, Jeanette Mariani rested in bed in a Dallas rehabilitation facility, snacking on honey nut Cheerios and gazing at a vase of purple hydrangea.<\/p>\n<p>She was eager to get out of there and go home.<\/p>\n<p>But her daughter, Janet, had a feeling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter her fall, I knew that she was going to decline,\u201d Janet said. \u201cYou had that sixth sense, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sixth sense is backed up by real numbers. Almost one out of 10 people over the age of 50 will die within a month of surgery for a broken hip. That rises to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/homeandrecreationalsafety\/falls\/adulthipfx.html\" target=\"_blank\">one in five<\/a>\u00a0if the patient already has an acute medical problem.<\/p>\n<p>Jeanette worked hard in rehab to become stronger, but underlying health issues caught up with her &#8212; previous lung problems got worse, lymphoma returned, and she became a statistic.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 512px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-9-2\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/broken-hip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/01\/janet_mariani.mp4?_=2\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/broken-hip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/01\/janet_mariani.mp4\">http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/broken-hip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/01\/janet_mariani.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAfter she left the hospital, she died within a month,\u201d Janet said.<\/p>\n<p>It was Christmas Day, and all of Jeanette\u2019s eight children were in Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were lucky,&#8221; Janet said. &#8220;We had time to get everybody in town. We just have our wonderful memories now.
