Suburbs like Arlington face the same challeng<\/em><em>es. Two miles west of the Dallas Cowboys\u2019 glitzy AT&amp;T Stadium, Wimbish Elementary is trying to turn itself around. It\u2019s been on the state\u2019s \u201cImprovement Required\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/rptsvr1.tea.texas.gov\/perfreport\/account\/2017\/Camp_Dist_Multi_Yr_IR_Aug.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list<\/a> for four straight years. As she stands outside Wimbish Elementary, she shakes every kid\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>Students, like 13-year-old Israel Henry, also help out. He&#8217;s one of the older students at the school, which goes up to the sixth grade. Israel holds the front door open for his classmates as they walk in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hello, good morning, Vince Brother. Hello, good morning, Nathan. Hello, good morning, Samaya.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Israel takes his job seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes it can get frustrating because I can\u2019t stop from having a smile on my face,\u201d he said. \u201cAlthough some students when I do it, they just don\u2019t say nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morning greetings and handshakes may seem like no big deal. But, Pride said, this is part of a larger strategy to jump-start learning. It may also be the only positive touch some of these kids experience.<\/p>\n<p>The school implemented the initiative &#8212; called Capturing Kids&#8217; Hearts &#8212; two years ago. Eighty-four percent are <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"The count and percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch or other public assistance.\">economically disadvantaged<\/span>, which is a higher rate than the district or the state.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s what\u2019s known as the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"The count and percentage of students who have been a member of a school for less than 83 percent of the school year.\">mobility<\/span> rate. At Wimbish, it was 34 percent during the 2015-16 school year. That means more than a third of kids weren\u2019t there for six weeks or more that year.<\/p>\n<p>The principal says these outside factors affect kids\u2019 ability to learn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re in a fight-or-flight mode, it\u2019s hard to have your brain where you can learn,\u201d Pride said. \u201cSometimes it may seem like they can\u2019t learn, and it\u2019s not really that they <em>can\u2019t<\/em>, it\u2019s just that they\u2019re so stressed out about other things, it\u2019s hard for them to be present.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"padding: 8px 0;font-family: Arial!important;font-size: 13px!important;line-height: 15px!important;text-align: center;border-top: 1px solid #dadada;margin: 0 30px\"><a style=\"color: #989898!important;text-decoration: none!important\" href=\"https:\/\/infogram.com\/1340b185-b420-4155-abaf-15ad6e26f6b3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Economically Disadvantaged Students At Wimbish<\/a><br \/>\n<a style=\"color: #989898!important;text-decoration: none!important\" href=\"https:\/\/infogram.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Infogram<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The school exceeded the state&#8217;s passing standard with rating of &#8220;Recognized&#8221; for the 2009-2010 school year. And it &#8220;Met Standard&#8221; during the 2012-2013 school year. But for the last four years, Wimbish has received the state&#8217;s worst rating: \u201cImprovement Required.\u201d <em>For more on the state\u2019s accountability system, <a href=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/saving-schools\/2018\/04\/16\/when-texas-schools-dont-make-the-grade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read the series introduction<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why this turnaround plan is so important. I just felt, \u2018If you let me, by the end of the year, I\u2019ll get them where they need to be,\u2019&#8221; she said. \u201cBut the first thing they had to have was that love. And that, they had to know that they knew they could trust me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donoghue said her main goal was to get her students to &#8220;feel the high of working hard.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no feeling of failure in there. There\u2019s no feeling of being afraid to give an answer,\u201d she said. \u201cThey are praised for trying to answer and a lot of their frustration will come when they have to really use their brain and think because they want it easy or they\u2019re the smarter ones\u2026and that\u2019s not what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said working in small groups of four to five students helps. This way, Donoghue can see who\u2019s struggling in certain areas and focus on helping that student.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"padding: 8px 0;font-family: Arial!important;font-size: 13px!important;line-height: 15px!important;text-align: center;border-top: 1px solid #dadada;margin: 0 30px\"><a style=\"color: #989898!important;text-decoration: none!important\" href=\"https:\/\/infogram.com\/c3a4a8a8-5a7a-47e9-87a4-8a1f7e8dfa3f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Demographics at Wimbish Elementary<\/a><br \/>\n<a style=\"color: #989898!important;text-decoration: none!important\" href=\"https:\/\/infogram.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Infogram<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Digging into data has become the mantra of education reform. Wimbish is taking it to a new level by teaching kids how to track and understand their own data.<\/p>\n<p>Debra Wall, the school&#8217;s dean of instruction, said students set goals and keep track of how they perform on tests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne class, they gave them a choice. Do you like bar graphs or do you like line graphs? What do you want? The kids love the line graphs, so they did line graphs,\u201d Wall said. \u201cThen one class actually started building loops so for every assessment they passed, they got to put a loop up and the loops are hanging up all over the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jovanni Coronado, 8, pulls out the folder with a bar chart he colored himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery month, we do Istation tests,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery month, if we go higher, we get to get a new level. Last school year, 72 percent of fifth-graders passed the math assessment; 62 percent passed reading. To compare, the passing rates for fifth-graders across the Arlington school district were 82 percent in math and 76 percent in reading. <a href=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/saving-schools\/2018\/04\/17\/north-texas-struggling-schools-by-the-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Explore more data on Wimbish<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Principal Pride said there are some early signs of a turnaround; preliminary fifth-grade test results show a surge in passing rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are at 19 and 20 on reading and math in the district of 56 schools,\u201d said Pride. \u201cSo we\u2019ve gone from the bottom to being in the top half.
