The West Dallas school named for America\u2019s great inventor couldn\u2019t find a way to earn to a passing grade. One more failing round of tests and the state would shut it down or even take over the district. They\u2019re encouraging these kids to pass the annual <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness\">STAAR<\/span> tests. This is not the scene you might expect on the first day of statewide testing at a perennially failing school.<\/p>\n<p>Students Jakori Daniels and Flor Morales say they\u2019re embarrassed \u2014 sort of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really does make me happy to see them out there, standing out there,\u201d Daniels said. \u201cI think they really do believe in us, and you know&#8230;give you a grin on your face.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"keraflashcard boxwidth65\" > <strong>STAAR<\/strong>: The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness program was implemented in 2011-12. The annual tests measure students\u2019 grasp of reading and math in grades 3-8, writing at grades 4 and 7, science at grades 5 and 8, social studies at grade 8 and end-of-course assessments for English I, English II, Algebra I, biology and U.S history. It replaced the Texas Assessments of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). <a href=\"https:\/\/tea.texas.gov\/student.assessment\/staar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More information here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>Morales chimed in: \u201cI feel supported and feel like I can do it, and like, it\u2019s helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the last five years, test scores here have needed all kinds of help. The state\u2019s lowest possible rating given to a school each year is \u201c<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\"><\/span>Improvement Required<\/span>.\u201d If a school fails five years or more, the Texas Education Agency can shut it down. She remembers what the school was like when she started: chaos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I walked in, I\u2019m looking for the theme song, \u2018Welcome to the Jungle,\u2019 literally,\u201d Fuller said.\u00a0\u201cThey were having a good time. If you corrected them or anything that they did, the teacher was the enemy at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teachers were heroes, not enemies, to Fuller. She grew up poor, in a dysfunctional family, in East Texas. With many of her students in West Dallas, it was like looking at a mirror. Maybe school for them could be what it was for her \u2013 a life preserver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was my way of getting out of the hood,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I was smart. I did my work, but I was one of those kids that was quiet. Photo: Lara Solt<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Many of these kids, including eighth-grader Alexis Razo,\u00a0<em>have<\/em> stuff going on at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy stepdad would constantly abuse my mom. I tried getting [Child Protective Services]. And my mom just said, \u2018No,\u2019 and she said, \u2018What happens at home stays at home,\u2019\u201d Razo recalled. \u201cSo I eventually just got tired of it [and] said, \u2018You know what? I\u2019m not going to tell you how to live your life. I just don\u2019t want to be in an environment like that.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She left to live with her dad.<\/p>\n<p>Razo says home can mess with school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stress is a lot,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes I just get frustrated. My frustration &#8212; I get it out in school sometimes. And at times I\u2019ve just walked out.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_04c60824-303f-45ce-b85b-0babac8eb009\" title=\"Economically Disadvantaged Students At Edison\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?R9q\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div style=\"padding: 8px 0; font-family: Arial!important; font-size: 13px!important; line-height: 15px!important; text-align: center; border-top: 1px solid #dadada; margin: 0 30px;\"><a style=\"color: #989898!important; text-decoration: none!important;\" href=\"https:\/\/infogram.com\/04c60824-303f-45ce-b85b-0babac8eb009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Economically Disadvantaged Students At Edison<\/a><br \/>\n<a style=\"color: #989898!important; text-decoration: none!important;\" href=\"https:\/\/infogram.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Infogram<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Switching focus<\/h5>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot of frustration here.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the roof collapsed this year. Kids see rats on the ground and mold on the walls. The building\u2019s less than half full.\u00a0Nine out of every 10 students are <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"The count and percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch or other public assistance.\">economically disadvantaged<\/span>. The majority of West Dallas residents speak Spanish at home \u2014 another hurdle for schools.<\/p>\n<p>So the district made a bold play: Edison became one of the first seven ACE schools in Texas. It stands for Accelerating Campus Excellence.<\/p>\n<div class=\"keraflashcard boxwidth65\" > <strong>ACE<\/strong>:\u00a0In 2015, Dallas ISD launched the Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) initiative. The plan incentivizes highly rated teachers and principals to work at the district\u2019s lowest-performing schools. The program also\u00a0extends the school day, provides students with uniforms, adding before and after-school activities and serving three meals a day.\u00a0Six of the seven initial ACE campuses in Dallas ISD have gone from &#8220;Improvement Required&#8221; to &#8220;Met Standard.&#8221; Garland ISD and Richardson ISD have recently implemented the ACE program at their schools. However, the original program is becoming expensive to sustain at Dallas ISD.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasisd.org\/Domain\/17129\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More on ACE here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>After the first year of the program, six of those struggling schools turned things around earning a &#8220;<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\"><\/span>Met Standard<\/span>&#8221; rating and nine <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\"><\/span> distinctions among them.<\/p>\n<p>Jolee Healey oversees the ACE program, which imports all new top-rated, highly paid faculty and staff. The school day is longer. The district also adds more resources and programs. Then the principal changed \u2013 and it\u2019s the leader who sets the tone.\u00a0Just ask Earl Gilmore, Edison\u2019s last-chance principal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I came in, I wanted to make sure that I focused on discipline, structure, procedures, routines. Those things were not here,\u201d Gilmore said. &#8220;Kids will not learn no matter how good the teacher or administrator may be. Photo: Lara Solt<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf I had to go back and do it all over again, I would have provided the structure, but then we know that instruction is the most vital piece of meeting standards,\u201d Gilmore said. \u201cAnd I would have actually put more emphasis on the instruction piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what Gilmore focused on this year. He says internal assessments in Edison\u2019s weakest areas have shown double-digit gains.<\/p>\n<p>However, Gilmore won\u2019t be here next year. He\u2019s moving to a school where the ACE turnaround worked: Dade Middle School. It&#8217;s in another tough neighborhood, just southeast of downtown.<\/p>\n<p>As for the kids of Edison, they\u2019re moving, too.
