Their rental home was ripped apart and they didn\u2019t have insurance. A lot of what they lost was gone for good. It\u2019s been a tough year for the family financially. They\u2019re still fighting to stay afloat.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Even though the storm tore a gaping hole in her Garland rental house, Jessica Cadick says for some reason, she still used the front door when she walked in to survey the damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis whole wall was gone,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This was destroyed by the tornado &#8212; from that corner to here was ripped out, windows and everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Construction on this house started fast. She grew up in the neighborhood and spent a lot of time with the family that lived here. This home has been a constant presence in her life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is your safe place,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That is the place where you can go and kick off your shoes and no one judges you. The people that you love exist in that place, and it is your bubble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the Dec. 26\u00a0tornado burst that bubble last year, cold reality pressed in. Cadick and her fianc\u00e9 didn\u2019t have renters insurance or full coverage on their truck that was smashed by the storm.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s a student and lab assistant at Eastfield College. They live paycheck to paycheck and their savings are thin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people that look from the outside in also have a tendency, I\u2019ve noticed, to lay blame. \u2018You should have had insurance.\u2019 I\u2019ve heard that several times,&#8221; Cadick said. &#8220;And my response to them a lot of the time is \u2018You\u2019re more than welcome to pay it for me. She says this kind of pervasive money worry can take its toll. S<\/p>\n<p>he says storm survivors are dealing with a lot of issues that can be overwhelming. Alexander says they&#8217;re looking at: &#8220;What am I going to have and what I can\u2019t have and how am I going to pay this in the long run? Am I going to be in a lot more debt than I was in before which I hadn\u2019t planned on being in?\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"quotemark \"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is your safe place. The people that you love exist in that place, and it is your bubble.\u201d <div class=\"quote-source\">Jessica Cadick, tornado survivor<\/div><div class=\"quote-rating-0\"><\/div><\/div>\n<h5>Playing the &#8216;juggle game&#8217;<\/h5>\n<p>Cadick says things didn\u2019t get easier after the storm.<\/p>\n<p>The truck they bought with cash to replace the tornado-wrecked one was stolen and they hadn\u2019t upgraded the insurance yet. Cadick\u2019s fianc\u00e9 was working as a contractor and needed the pick-up for jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Those jobs dried up once the new truck was taken. It\u2019s been tough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re playing the juggle game,&#8221; Cadick says. &#8220;We pay this bill this month, and hopefully they won\u2019t turn things off and then we\u2019ll pay that. Photo\/Lara Solt<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While he talked to KERA last spring, Cadick\u2019s fianc\u00e9 Charles Beck didn\u2019t want to participate in an interview this time around. She says he\u2019s just too down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe feels very responsible for the family\u2019s well-being financially and otherwise and like I said, we\u2019re struggling. And I think he carries most of that burden himself,&#8221; Cadick said. &#8220;I think it was just too much. It doesn\u2019t pay much but it\u2019s something. A little money &#8212; and a little boost to morale.<\/p>\n<p>Another spot of good news?
