They need that money to buy food and pay the bills.\u00a0<\/em><em>One Garland family is living with the fallout after a tornado ripped its\u00a0house apart and smashed its truck. While the landlord pays to rebuild the home, the family pays to fix the rest.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A soundtrack of nail guns, hammers and electric saws punctuates an otherwise quiet day on Oceanport Drive in Garland.<\/p>\n<p>Contractor Charles Beck is working hard to put a storm-wrecked house back together. He\u2019s particularly invested because he used to live here.<\/p>\n<p>Before the tornado, he was renting it with his fianc\u00e9e and their three kids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuckily, we got the contract to do the repairs on our home, so that helped put me back to work,\u201d Beck said.<\/p>\n<p>Repairing his own home is Beck&#8217;s first contracting job since his work truck full of tools was crushed during the Dec. 26 tornado. He said he had general liability insurance on the truck, so the damages were not covered. They didn\u2019t have renter\u2019s insurance, either. They have to replace everything they lost from the storm out of pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just the big ticket items; it\u2019s all the little things,&#8221; Beck said. &#8220;When you think about having to replace the food in your fridge, it\u2019s not just a grocery shopping trip. It\u2019s everything from the ketchup to the mustard. It\u2019s a lot more expensive than just your weekly grocery shopping trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"quotemark \"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re looking at an extra $100, $150 a month when you\u2019re already on a tight budget, it\u2019s a lot to spend. And you never think something like this is going to happen so you\u2019re like, &#8216;I\u2019ll be OK.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"quote-source\">Charles Beck, contractor and tornado survivor<\/div><div class=\"quote-rating-0\"><\/div><\/div>\n<h5>BUDGETING FOR THE UNEXPECTED<\/h5>\n<p>Why are Beck and his family\u00a0among the 60 percent of renters who don&#8217;t have insurance? Photo\/Lara Solt<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Beck and his fianc\u00e9e Jessica Cadick spent last fall calling insurance companies to get renter\u2019s insurance quotes, but they decided to put off buying a policy until the first of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet through Christmas, make sure the kids had a good Christmas and then get renter\u2019s insurance in January,&#8221; Cadick said. &#8220;So five days previous to [the storm], it would have really been handy.&#8221;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beck has two children: a 6-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter. Cadick\u2019s son is 9. They\u2019re living in a temporary rental house while the old one is under construction. Leasing it costs $200 a month more than their other place. That stretches their already tight budget even tighter. It\u2019s like they\u2019ve run into a wall and there\u2019s no place for them to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"quote-source\">Keith Christie, Director of Friendship House<\/div><div class=\"quote-rating-0\"><\/div><\/div>\n<h5>NEEDING THE COMMUNITY&#8217;S HELP<\/h5>\n<p>Cadick said the financial stress of surviving a tornado, losing a home, truck and most of their possessions has been devastating. She hopes her family is back where they belong before summer because she and Beck plan to tie the knot in July. Photo\/Lara Solt<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI called to cancel our contract afterwards because we didn\u2019t have the money any longer to pay for a wedding,\u201d Cadick said.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0the photographer offered to take pictures for free and found a wedding planner to pick up almost all of the rest.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding serves as a\u00a0bright spot in the not-so-distant future, even though reminders of the storm are everywhere. All this family has to do is pull up a bank statement or glance at the tallest tree in their old front yard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my living room curtain.
