Photo\/Thorne Anderson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOr tornado-made patio,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That\u2019s exactly what it is. You can see the nails are all still there where it just ripped the whole wall, along with the roof, off the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s not exaggerating.<\/p>\n<p>The back wall and living room ceiling are gone.<\/p>\n<p>Those brave enough to peek over the edge of the apartment building will see a pile of shattered toys, sofa cushions and gnarled debris mashed into the grass below.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson&#8217;s living room floor is covered with glass, water-logged books, and diapers that must have belonged to a baby downstairs. A single child\u2019s shoe sits alone, stuffed with insulation by the wind.<\/p>\n<p>So much of what she owned was ruined. Only a few things survived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the wet bar the glass is still there, and it\u2019s not even bolted in or anything, you just lift it up,&#8221; she says. &#8220;It was still there, and there was a family portrait that was still there with no frame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even while wading through a sea of shattered possessions, Anderson is cheerful.<\/p>\n<h5>VIDEO: Jennifer Anderson Shares Her Story<\/h5>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zEluRoH56lQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"quotemark \">\u201cYou don\u2019t realize how much every little single thing costs until you\u2019re replacing it.\u201d<div class=\"quote-source\">Jennifer Anderson, storm survivor<\/div><div class=\"quote-rating-0\"><\/div><\/div>\n<h5>LEARNING TO LIVE FRUGALLY<\/h5>\n<p>Anderson\u00a0and her two young sons, Jayden and Jordan, have spent two months in a hotel room where there\u2019s not much in the way of a kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went into Walmart with my gift card and invested in a rice cooker, so a lot of my meals come from that,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Cook some rice, steam some veggies, steam some chicken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That kind of frugal creativity is her mission right now. She had a $10,000\u00a0renter\u2019s insurance policy when the storm hit. Then there\u2019s furniture. Like the bed Jayden and Jordan\u00a0shared. It was near a broken window, rain-soaked and covered with glass.<\/p>\n<p>The bed was hauled away and trashed, which revealed some\u00a0incriminating evidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandy that they weren\u2019t supposed to have!&#8221; Anderson says. &#8220;They snuck candy, threw the paper under the bed. Photo\/Thorne Anderson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Her oldest, Jayden, was 3 when he lost his dad. <span data-term=\"goog_1459094004\">Two years later<\/span>, both boys still talk about him constantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a couple of weeks ago, I was giving them a bath, and the 4-year-old picked up his towel and he said, \u2018This is how my Daddy wrings out the towel, you don\u2019t wring it like Daddy.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And I looked at him and I saw what he was doing and I was like, &#8216;You\u2019re exactly right, that\u2019s exactly how he wrings out the towel.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"quotemark \"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to kind of focus on that when you\u2019re still trying to make ends meet. You\u2019re trying to focus on: Where am I going to live. Photo\/Thorne Anderson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI talk about it with people as like a radar scanner,&#8221; Colbert says. &#8220;So you think, &#8216;Oh my gosh? When is the next bad thing going to happen?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colbert says\u00a0that\u2019s just one of the many symptoms that can slam into someone after a traumatic experience \u2014 symptoms that can linger six months or longer.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally high levels of anxiety. They\u2019re always feeling tense or edgy,&#8221; Colbert says. They have angry outbursts maybe, or they have a lot of crying. They feel weepy, tearful, or they isolate. They have trouble focusing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anderson can relate to that. Just before the tornado hit, she quit her full-time job managing a mental health clinic. Determined to spend more time with her kids, she now works flexible hours for Primerica, a financial services company.<\/p>\n<p>That means her weekly take-home pay has gone from $700 to $350.\u00a0Anderson hopes to add another part-time job to supplement her income once she and her two boys get settled into a new apartment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to kind of focus on that when you\u2019re still trying to make ends meet,&#8221; Anderson says. &#8220;You\u2019re trying to focus on: Where am I going to live? When am I going to be able to get furniture?\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"quotemark \"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019ve already felt like you\u2019ve had to start over. And you feel like &#8216;I\u2019m just now rebuilding, I\u2019m just now catching my breath.&#8217; And then something like this happens. Photo\/Thorne Anderson<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p><\/figure>\n<h5>KNOWING\u00a0HER OWN STRENGTH<\/h5>\n<p>Money worries aside, there are some days Anderson has trouble mustering the strength to press reset again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019ve already felt like you\u2019ve had to start over,&#8221; she says. &#8220;You feel like &#8216;I\u2019m just now rebuilding, I\u2019m just now catching my breath.&#8217; And then something like this happens. It\u2019s really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody expects to lose a spouse and a home <span data-term=\"goog_1459094005\">in two years<\/span>. Nobody\u2019s prepared for that kind of financial and emotional hit. Anderson certainly wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still here and I\u2019ve gone through all these different things,&#8221; she says. &#8220;And I feel like there has to be a reason that I\u2019m still here. I\u2019m still able to stand on my own two feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You never really know how resilient you are until something tests your strength.
