Photo\/Christina Ulsh<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Every other weekend, Niuying Cao and her classmates pile up in a large, white van and head to 99 Ranch Market. It\u2019s a bustling Chinese supermarket in a Plano shopping center.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>More than 7,000 miles away from China, it\u2019s a small reminder of home for the 10th grader, who goes by Arron.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Well, sort of.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s different from there,\u201d Arron says. \u201cIt\u2019s much different from China. Photo\/Christina Ulsh<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At the store, she joins another student, Jiaying Zhang, who goes by her American name, Shirley. They grab a shopping cart and walk up and down the aisles.<\/p>\n<p>Arron, who\u2019s 17, is from Shanghai. She\u2019s one of 28 students who arrived in August to attend International Leadership of Texas, a public charter high school in Garland.<\/p>\n<p>The teens live on campus in new apartments. During the week, they have wake-up calls at 6:10 a.m. It\u2019s lights out by 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. But on the weekend?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn China, if I get up late, I\u2019ll always have my breakfast,\u201d Arron says. \u201cBut here if I get up very late, maybe the breakfast was cold. But in China, my mom will do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughs.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>In U.S., Chinese student population keeps growing<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Overall, the number of Chinese international students at American schools has grown during the past decade, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Photo\/Christina Ulsh<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gary Manns is the director of international students at the International Leadership of Texas and the students\u2019 guardian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m like their second dad,\u201d he says. \u201cI make sure they\u2019re fed. I make sure they\u2019re in bed by a certain hour. I get \u2018em up in in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manns spent two years teaching in China. His wife is Chinese. The couple live on campus with the students and spend a lot of time with them. Manns stays in touch with the kids\u2019 parents using a voice and text messaging service called WeChat. He also takes them on the weekend shopping trips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was taking them to NorthPark [Center] and things like that, but their parents want me to kinda slow down on the shopping things,\u201d Manns says. He laughs. \u201cThese kids were buying expensive items. Those who come typically are from middle- and upper-class families. Photo\/Christina Ulsh<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Once they graduate from high school, many will stay in the U.S. to attend college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of them see American universities as better universities to prepare their children &#8212; for future careers and goals,\u201d Manns says.<\/p>\n<p>Once they have that degree, Manns says many will try to land jobs in the U.S. and stay here permanently.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the goal is to master English. A lot of the kids know a little bit when they arrive. In class, teachers have to speak slowly and use visuals, showing them pictures of words.<\/p>\n<h6>&#8216;Like a new world&#8217;<\/h6>\n<p>Shirley, who\u2019s 16, says it can take some time to get used to living in a foreign country. Photo\/Christina Ulsh<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cEverything is new and it is different from China in some ways,\u201d Shirley says. \u201cIt\u2019s just like a new world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a new world where teens have much more independence. That was surprising to Arron. For example, the kids wear makeup at school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn China, if you wear makeup every day, you were in trouble,\u201d Arron says.<\/p>\n<p>In China, girls also get in trouble if they wear their hair up, Arron says. It\u2019s quite a contrast to how she typically dresses. Manns points this out on a recent Friday at school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven today, today\u2019s a casual day for kids,\u201d Manns says. \u201cThey can wear polos, whatever. Photo\/Christina Ulsh<\/p><\/div>\n<h6><strong>Practicing English everywhere<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Still, there are some things it seems teens everywhere like to do. During this outing at the market, the girls stayed glued to their iPhones. Shirley even brought her iPad. At one point, Shirley approaches a photographer and begins reading some lines from her smartphone screen.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo bashful when I spied her,\u201d Shirley reads. \u201cSo pretty. She ashamed \u2026 \u201c<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an Emily Dickinson poem. A few minutes later, Arron approaches a stranger and begins reciting lines, too, as Shirley records it on her smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out it\u2019s a class assignment to get the kids to practice their English.<\/p>\n<p>The girls try not to laugh as they approach other people. One man says no. Photo courtesy Arron Cao<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They\u2019re learning Spanish, too. Arron\u2019s in luck. Each Chinese student is paired with a local mentor. Arron\u2019s is Arianna Guevera, a 15-year-old who goes by Aria. She was born in Mexico and speaks Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>The first time they went to Aria\u2019s home, they made tostadas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI showed her how to prepare, how to put the beans and the lettuce and the meat of her choice,\u201d Aria says. \u201cAt first, she had trouble because it\u2019s not something usual for them to eat with their hands, and a tostada you eat with your hands. But then after she got the hang of it, she was like, \u2018oh, this is really good. Yum.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arron\u2019s going to spend Christmas break with Aria and her family. On the menu?
