Ch\u00e1vez and Bill Zeeble have followed a group of North Texas students as they navigate high school. We call it the Class of \u201917. These students are entering the final weeks of their junior year. We\u2019re checking in to see what challenges they face as they prepare for life after high school.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Balancing\u00a0High School And College<\/h5>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joel Luera is a student in the Dallas school district who&#8217;s been taking college classes. Ch\u00e1vez<\/strong>: Joel is a really bright student. He\u2019s always made good grades. Joel is a junior this year at W.W. Samuell High School, but he\u2019s actually in Samuell\u2019s early college high school program. All of his classes this semester are on the campus of Eastfield College, a community college in Mesquite. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joel has talked about challenges that he\u2019s faced recently, just making that transition from high school to college. Nobody\u2019s telling him: &#8220;You need to go to class. You need to do your homework.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He&#8217;s had to deal with personal struggles involving a friend. That was a big distraction for him \u2014 to the point that he ended up getting a D in speech, which is kind of unusual since he\u2019s a top-notch debate student. And he talked very candidly about that struggle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It\u2019s been different,&#8221; Joel said. &#8220;That\u2019s one thing they kind of don\u2019t tell you. You still gotta go through all the high school stuff. The quote-unquote &#8216;discovering yourself&#8217; and all that is a part of growing up and you still gotta do all that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joel said he\u2019s learned from that experience \u2014\u00a0and he knows what he has to do this semester to get better grades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"quotemark \"> &#8220;It\u2019s been different \u2026 That\u2019s one thing they kind of don\u2019t tell you when you go [to college]. You still gotta go through all the high school stuff. Photo\/Lara Solt<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Deciding\u00a0Between 4-Year University Or Community College<\/h5>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelli Bowdy is a Fort Worth student who wants to become a nurse. She and her family have different opinions as to whether she should go to a community college or a four-year college.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bill Zeeble<\/strong>: Kelli definitely wants to go to a four-year school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have to grow up at some point,&#8221; Kelli said. &#8220;So I want to get out on my own and get a feel of the real world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s been pushed to go to college since she was tiny by her grandmother. Her grandmother went to Texas A&amp;M. In her eyes, Kelli needs to head to a four-year school. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelli not only acknowledges that her grandmother\u2019s dream is that she go to college and graduate from college, but that\u2019s become her dream, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her dad wants her to stay local. He\u2019s worried that if anything ever happens, he wants to be able to get to her, just in case there\u2019s a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"quotemark \"> \u201cYou have to grow up at some point. So I want to get out on my own and get a feel of the real world.\u201d<div class=\"quote-source\">Kelli Bowdy, high school junior<\/div><div class=\"quote-rating-0\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<h5>The Class Of &#8217;17 Grows Up<\/h5>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are these kids getting much guidance from teachers and counselors at their schools about what they should be doing or could be doing after high school?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>SC<\/strong>: One of the interesting things about the early college high school program at W.W. Samuell in Dallas is that the program is relatively small, so the teachers know all of the students. Every day, in between classes, the students they head to an office. And everyone congregates there. They can ask some of the administrators there for help or if they have questions about their schedule \u2014 pretty much anything they need help with. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>BZ<\/strong>: Kelli goes to O.D. Wyatt High School, which has a Go Center &#8212; a place that helps students get ready for college. Ch\u00e1vez and Bill Zeeble in studio.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What are the big takeaways from following these students around for the past few years?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>BZ<\/strong>: You\u2019re watching these kids mature. So when I first talked to Kelli a few years ago, she was interested in nursing and thinking about it. And now she\u2019s not just interested in nursing ever more so, but she\u2019s talking about \u201cmaybe I want to live alone.
