Wyatt High"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>O.D. Wyatt\u00a0\u2013 and the Fort Worth neighborhood around it \u2013 looks a lot different now than when the school opened in 1968. Back then, the\u00a0student population was mostly white. Today, it\u2019s more than 50 percent Hispanic, and there&#8217;s a growing refugee population. Academically, the school has struggled. A\u00a0new principal is trying to change students\u2019 perceptions of Wyatt.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Welcome Changes<\/h5>\n<p>Ninth grader Quinten Hutchinson has heard all the things people say about his school \u2013 O.D. Wyatt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThem kids up there is bad and loud,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p>He says that\u2019s not true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s because the reputation that they\u2019ve had for so long and &#8217;cause the school is kind of old and the stuff that used to happen,&#8221; he says. &#8220;So when people hear [O.D. The new principal, Mario Layne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Mr. Layne came, he changed stuff,&#8221; Quinten says. &#8220;You can\u2019t be on phones no more, &#8217;cause last year you could be on phones in the classroom. And we got to wear IDs &#8212; we got to keep them on. So yeah, it\u2019s changed, but it\u2019s changed in a good way.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5>Wyatt On The Move<\/h5>\n<p>When O.D. Wyatt opened in 1968, the school was predominately white. By 1994, 90 percent of students were African American. Today, it\u2019s more than half Hispanic. And about one in 10 kids are refugees from countries like Bhutan, Myanmar, Somalia and Nepal.<\/p>\n<p>Layne says the school used to attract students to its International Baccalaureate program. It\u2019s no longer there. The school was competitive in academics and athletics. And it\u2019s known for a vibrant choir program.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bexvJMuJrh4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;We have a rich history at O.D. Wyatt High School, a lot of history that people don\u2019t know about,&#8221; Layne says. &#8220;Back in the &#8217;70s, we were pretty much a majority white school. We were a highly sought-after school. And a lot of people don\u2019t know that. Lane is trying to change what people think about his school.<\/p>\n<p>At 6 feet, 7 inches tall, Layne, a\u00a0former Texas Tech basketball player, towers above students when he walks the hallways, which are now lined with college memorabilia.<\/p>\n<p>He singles out students who wear their ID badges: \u201cHey, what\u2019s up? Look at you, man! It\u2019s my lucky day. You\u2019re wearing an ID. Wyatt student<\/div><div class=\"quote-rating-0\"><\/div><\/div>\n<h5>Believing In Wyatt&#8217;s Potential<\/h5>\n<p>O.D. Wyatt has seen a surge in poverty. In the early &#8217;90s, a quarter of students were economically disadvantaged. Today, it&#8217;s 70 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Layne says that doesn\u2019t mean students can\u2019t succeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a perception that our students aren\u2019t smart or our teachers don\u2019t work hard or whatever the case may be,&#8221; he says. &#8220;The truth is that we have really smart and talented kids. The truth is we have some hardworking teachers. The truth is Wyatt has the potential to be a really, really good school, but you have to have people that believe in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a recent breakfast meeting on campus, there were plenty of believers &#8212; folks from community organizations and churches. The soundtrack to the meeting was O.D. Wyatt\u2019s orchestra. Or how for the first time ninth\u00a0graders next year will be able to earn college and high school credit for certain classes.<\/p>\n<p>Layne tells the crowd they\u2019re pushing college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve really worked as a school working on those kids that have really been struggling, really been trying to get over the hump,&#8221; he says. &#8220;But now we\u2019re also trying to push kids that are top, kids that in the middle that can potentially be at the top. Wyatt principal<\/div><div class=\"quote-rating-0\"><\/div><\/div>\n<h5>An Introduction To College<\/h5>\n<p>In March, 200 kids showed up to school at 5 a.m. \u2014\u00a0not for class but to hop on charter buses for a trip south to the University of Houston and Texas Southern.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time in years the high school had put on this kind of trip \u2014 and it was the first time many of these kids had set foot on a college campus.<\/p>\n<p>LaJeania Allums, a case manager at O.D. They were listening attentive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some kids thought they couldn\u2019t go to college because they couldn\u2019t afford it. Allums says the trip changed minds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, I don\u2019t know where they\u2019ve been in the last three to four years of their lives, but we speak scholarship from the time they get here in the ninth.,&#8221; she said. &#8220;You don\u2019t have to wait till you\u2019re a senior to get money. Your grades write the check. That\u2019s what I always say. That\u2019s my philosophy. Your grades write the check.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If they can get more kids to think that way, school leaders say, they can keep changing minds \u2013 not just the students, but how people across Fort Worth see O.D.
