These days, the majority of Frisco students are non-white. Teachers and administrators are responding to the demographic changes in the\u00a0district \u2014 and the academic challenges and community issues that have come with those changes.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Parents can be hard to reach<\/h5>\n<p>Charis Hunt stood in front of colleagues last fall and talked about how to reach the wide range of kids in Frisco schools. Hunt, who\u2019s African American, is the school district\u2019s director of Human Resources. She also leads its diversity task force.<\/p>\n<p>The group is made up of dozens of educators, parents and other residents. Members are\u00a0exploring how the district can be more inclusive.For example, the district could hire more teachers of color, and could encourage more parents to come to school events \u2014 which can be a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of those &#8216;multicultural nights&#8217; at elementary\u2026no one\u2019s \u2014 I wouldn\u2019t say no one \u2014 but I mean I think it\u2019s the other cultures that [are] attending it,&#8221; one group member said. &#8220;If you have it on open house night, then everybody would attend it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_412\" style=\"max-width:100%;  width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-412\" src=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/changing-face-schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2017\/02\/Liberty2-1-1024x656.jpg\" alt=\"Students crowd the hallway after the last bell rings at Liberty High School in Frisco. Photo\/Lara Solt<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A couple of decades ago, Frisco was a small town with an almost all-white school district. Now, immigrant families are flocking to Frisco. But many of those parents don\u2019t get involved in the schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of that is cultural because English is not their first language, and so that is an intimidating thing,&#8221; one group member\u00a0said. &#8220;You might have these kids that English is their first language, but then their parents are not, and they don\u2019t feel comfortable getting up in front of the whole school and talking about it and celebrating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"quotemark \"> &#8220;Why is it that in an affluent, educated community such as Frisco ISD [have] students that might not opt in to participate?&#8221; <div class=\"quote-source\">Charis Hunt, human resources director<\/div><div class=\"quote-rating-0\"><\/div><\/div>\n<h5>Making opportunity accessible<\/h5>\n<p>Frisco, like other school districts with rapidly changing demographics, is trying to figure all this out. Photo\/Lara Solt<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For example, 11 percent of Frisco students are African American but only 7 percent of those\u00a0students are enrolled in pre-AP and AP classes.<\/p>\n<p>As for Hispanic students, they make up nearly 14 percent of the district, but about 11 percent are enrolled in AP classes.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the gap isn&#8217;t huge, district officials say they aren\u2019t satisfied with those numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur group engaged in some discussion about why we thought this might be happening,&#8221; Hunt said. \u201cWhy is it that in an affluent, educated community such as Frisco ISD [have] students that might not opt in to participate? Or maybe they think these classes are too hard.<\/p>\n<p>You can see this play out at Liberty High School, where Principal Scott Warstler talks about the challenges at his school.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_667\" style=\"max-width:100%;  width: 900px\" >Graphic\/Molly Evans<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBecause the standard of education is so high here, I\u2019d say the biggest struggle that we see with some students coming from different parts of the country or other countries is they may not be at the level that our students who have been in Frisco their entire lives are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Warstler said that\u2019s why it\u2019s crucial to look at those learning gaps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo how do we within the structure of the master schedule and the way that we offer courses and what our teachers do instructionally, how do we close those gaps for those students as quickly as possible?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those looking into these issues say part of the answer may lie with teachers \u2013 and making sure they reach these kids at a much younger age.<\/p>\n<h6>Demographic Changes at Liberty High<\/h6>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_d4ea6fd4-7894-4b75-a61d-27dd63b55651\" title=\"Liberty High Demographic Changes From 2009-2014\" src=\"\/\/e.infogr.am\/js\/dist\/embed.js?L86\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div style=\"padding: 8px 0;
