Its schools have been transformed, too. Here&#8217;s a look at how one school \u2014 Liberty High \u2014 is changing.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>It\u2019s a Friday afternoon, a little after 2, at Liberty High School. Student Zaki <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"Sayyid\">Sayyid<\/span>\u00a0recites the Islamic call to prayer. He and 10 other Muslim students are inside a classroom, on their knees facing east.<\/p>\n<p>Girls wear hijabs. Everyone\u2019s taken off their shoes. They spend the next 15 minutes in prayer.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t a common scene at most schools. But at Liberty, it happens every Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Frisco, once a small, railroad town, is now one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Two decades ago, three out of every four people living in Frisco were white. Today, it\u2019s a fusion of races and ethnicities.<\/p>\n<p>And the schools are a microcosm of the city. She was born in Mesquite. Her parents are from the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, known for its majestic Hindu temples.<\/p>\n<p>Even though she was born in North Texas, Murali embraces her Indian roots. She celebrates Diwali and goes to the Hindu version of Sunday school.<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to Tamil, the language spoken in southern India, it was hard for her to adopt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was younger, like in elementary school, my parents took me to like a Tamil school that they had running here, and I hated it,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I can understand Tamil, but my American accent is so strong, you can\u2019t really understand my Tamil.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_431\" style=\"max-width:100%;  width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-431 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/changing-face-schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2017\/02\/Liberty21-1024x660.jpg\" alt=\"Journalism student Divya Murali talks to Journalism Teacher Brian Higgins about her weekly podcast featuring kids of different religions, genders and ethnicity for the student news site, Wingspan, at Liberty High School in Frisco. This cultural curiosity is what fuels her \u2014 and the weekly podcast\u00a0she produces.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHey there, Redhawks, I\u2019m Divya Murali and this is the 19th\u00a0episode of the United Colors of Liberty, and today I\u2019m here with senior Lizzie \u2026\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Every week, Murali has an in-depth conversation with a different Liberty student. There\u2019s an Indian student who\u2019s Christian, a kid who\u2019s a lesbian with interracial parents and a black student who doesn\u2019t celebrate Kwanzaa.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes current headlines spark an idea. Like when she interviewed a Russian-born classmate.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHow do you feel about there may potentially be more of an intense hostility between the countries?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it would get to the same point it was at the Cold War\u2026\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lately, Murali&#8217;s been thinking about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/28\/us\/kansas-shooting-indians-fbi.html\" target=\"_blank\">shooting of two Indian men<\/a> in suburban Kansas in February.\u00a0One was killed. The accused shooter is white. Photo\/Lara Solt<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p><\/figure>\n<h5>Accommodating A Changing Student Body<\/h5>\n<p>Brian Higgins teaches journalism to Murali and her classmates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully, they\u2019re hearing something that they maybe never thought of before,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And if we can get one student to think differently or to perhaps better understand the diversity and the different people and their backgrounds on this campus, then I think we\u2019ve done a good job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Higgins came from a different school \u2014 Lovejoy \u2014 that\u2019s affluent and about 85 percent white. He says being in a more diverse school gives kids the chance to explore a more challenging range of issues.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-SF48ohSDns?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Take Megan Lin. She&#8217;s Chinese, a sophomore and just wrote a column about Asian stereotypes. Ch\u00e1vez<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Parents would come pick them up,&#8221; he said. &#8220;What we found was they were missing about two hours of class because of the commute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At one point, 30 students were leaving campus to pray at a Plano mosque. Eventually, Liberty let them use an empty classroom as a prayer room.<\/p>\n<p>So far, Warstler says, they haven\u2019t gotten any pushback.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not out proselytizing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They\u2019re not out in the lunch periods trying to gain, you know. They take care of themselves in their group and they accept those that are a part of their group. Photo\/Lara Solt<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p><\/figure>\n<div class=\"quotemark \"> &#8220;I think that that\u2019s complete lack of understanding, like an ignorance of people that you\u2019ve been neighbors with for years.&#8221; <div class=\"quote-source\">Jay Schlaegel, Liberty graduate who organized religious diversity forum<\/div><div class=\"quote-rating-0\"><\/div><\/div>\n<h5>Earning Respect By Showing Respect<\/h5>\n<p>Learning more about each other was the point last year when then-senior Jay Schlaegel organized a forum on religious diversity at Liberty.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s now a freshman at Texas A&amp;M. At the time, Schlaegel was president of Liberty\u2019s Bible study group. Ch\u00e1vez<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He organized the event after hearing comments about Muslims and Hindus that bothered him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Islamic radicalism around the globe, you have people in Frisco, Texas, that are being talked about in ways that&#8230;it\u2019s an unrelated thing,&#8221; Schlaegel said. &#8220;And I can\u2019t agree with that. I think that that\u2019s complete lack of understanding, like an ignorance of people that you\u2019ve been neighbors with for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the forum, Schlaegel and the other students explained what their religions are about \u2013 and took questions from the audience. We live in suburban houses. We have eaten\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 16-year-old says he feels a sense of responsibility to explain what Islam is and what it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And then hopefully, people from quote \u2018the Western World\u2019 will be able to say, \u2018Hey, you guys aren\u2019t exactly like ISIS,&#8221; Farooqui says. &#8220;You guys aren\u2019t exactly like terror groups. You aren\u2019t exactly supporting an oppressive nation. And hopefully, that can sort of alter the perception we see today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>Update: Prayer Room Raises Concerns<\/h6>\n<p>The classroom used as a prayer room got the attention of the Texas attorney general&#8217;s office. The office sent a letter to the Frisco school district raising constitutional concerns about the room. The Frisco superintendent called the letter a &#8220;publicity stunt&#8221; and said the prayer room has been in use for several years without complaints.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Boyer was so unhappy about the prayer room at Liberty High that he went to a recent Frisco school board meeting and spoke his mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiberty High School is not a mosque. It\u2019s not a synagogue. It\u2019s not a tabernacle. It\u2019s not a temple. It\u2019s not a church,\u201d Boyer said. \u201cIt is a school. It is a public school supported by taxpayers for the purpose of educating our children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Frisco Independent School District\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/keranews.org\/post\/frisco-isd-attorney-generals-letter-prayer-room-publicity-stunt\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">has said it didn\u2019t violate any state or federal laws<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by having a prayer room and that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/changing-face-schools\/2017\/03\/07\/from-prayer-room-to-podcasts-liberty-high-shatters-stereotypes\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">the room is open to students of all faiths<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Marc Rylander, director of communications for the attorney general&#8217;s office, issued a statement, saying the office had been in contact with school district attorneys.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They assured us &#8230; that students of all faith, or no faith, may now use this meeting room during non-instructional time on a first-come, first-served basis for student-led activities,&#8221; the statement said. &#8220;Religious liberty is a cornerstone of our society and we are glad that students at Frisco ISD may practice their faith in accordance with their beliefs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear how many public schools in Texas have prayer rooms or designated areas where students can pray, but they are in some schools across the state and country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may hear it said sometimes that prayer\u2019s been kicked out of public schools,\u201d said Joy Baskin, director of legal services with the Texas Association of School Boards. \u201cIn fact, what has been determined by the courts is that schools can\u2019t compel prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baskin said prayer rooms in schools are acceptable and legal under the First Amendment. Schools can also give students time to pray, whether it\u2019s during free time or a lunch period. They can give students passes to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiousfreedomcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/publicschools.pdf\">leave class to pray or leave campus for religious education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>Student Voices On Race<\/h6>\n<p><em>Students talked to KERA about their experiences with race in and out of school.
