Photo\/Lara Solt<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>District<\/strong>:\u00a0Dallas ISD<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year opened<\/strong>: 1958<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enrollment<\/strong>: 1,446 (Source:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dallasisd.org\/cms\/lib\/TX01001475\/Centricity\/Shared\/\/SchoolProfiles\/SCHOOL_PROFILE_8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Kimball&#8217;s 2016-2017 profile<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mascot and colors<\/strong>:\u00a0Knights; navy blue and scarlet red<\/p>\n<p>Kimball High School opened two years after its namesake, <a href=\"https:\/\/tshaonline.org\/handbook\/online\/articles\/fki09\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Ford Kimball, <\/a>died in Dallas.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Kimball <\/span><span class=\"s2\">was a teacher, superintendent and hospital executive who created the country\u2019s first <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Blue Cross hospital insurance plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When Kimball High opened in the\u00a0Oak Cliff neighborhood, it was filled with mostly white and middle-class students. By the late 1970s, the African American student population ballooned. The largest number of charters in Dallas are in or being planned for southern Dallas, the area in the Kimball High School feeder pattern. The first accredited graduating class was in 1936, according to the school&#8217;s website. High school classes moved to Reed Middle School in 1954, and to the current location on Camp Wisdom Road in 1965. The campus has expanded over the decades\u00a0to include\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/sandrameadowsclassic.com\/duncanville-isd-athletics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sandra Meadows Memorial Arena<\/a> in 2003 and a new classroom wing and\u00a0other renovations to the baseball and softball facilities the following year.<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6>School Mission Statement<\/h6>\n<blockquote><p>..to provide a supportive learning environment with high academic expectations for each student to develop skills to achieve lifelong success and contribute to society.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h6>Urban District Within A Suburban City<\/h6>\n<p>Duncanville is a diverse city with a nearly evenly divided African American, Hispanic and white population. Its median household income is slightly below that of Dallas, and data shows rising poverty levels. Wyatt High School<\/p><\/div>\n<h6>Boosting School Spirit<\/h6>\n<p>The school \u2013 and the neighborhood around it \u2013 looks a lot different now than when Wyatt opened. Nearly 50 years ago, Wyatt&#8217;s student population was mostly white. By the early 1990s, it became more than 90 percent African American. Today, it\u2019s more than 50 percent Hispanic. There&#8217;s a growing refugee population.<\/p>\n<p>Academically, the school has struggled.
