Caring for someone on that journey comes with its own unique challenges. One North Texas man adapted his life to become a caregiver when his mother was diagnosed with dementia. Now he\u2019s trying to balance her treatment, his career and their new day-to-day.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>On a sunny afternoon at the Dallas Zoo, Tech Guerrero stands behind his mother Maria Luisa Castillo Rocha\u2019s wheelchair, snapping photos of lions in an enclosure. The family is here for the zoo&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keranews.org\/post\/dallas-zoo-helps-people-dementia-connect-nature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wild Gatherings program<\/a>, designed for people with early-stage dementia.<\/p>\n<p>The program gives <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Whose full name is full name is Jos\u00e9 Antonio Guerrero Castillo\">Guerrero<\/span> a chance to connect with other family caregivers from across North Texas, sharing advice and anecdotes. Smith<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cShe&#8217;s a retired banking manager for international banking in Mexico City, so she used to be very social and very verbally engaged,&#8221; Guerrero says. &#8220;And we&#8217;re here because we&#8217;re hoping that she will oil those motors of social engagement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/caregivers\/2019\/12\/17\/caring-for-someone-with-dementia-can-be-a-full-time-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>&gt;&gt;WATCH: Tech<\/strong> <strong>Guerrero go through a typical day caring for his mother.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Castillo Rocha is 90 and has been diagnosed with vascular dementia. Symptoms can include trouble paying attention, problem solving and slower thinking. Decades ago, Castillo\u00a0Rocha mentored other young women in her professional life. Friends and coworkers knew her as a great conversationalist, someone you could confide in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not learn that my mom had any form of dementia until probably one or two years after she had been diagnosed,&#8221; Guerrero says. &#8220;And obviously, being the person affected by it, she didn\u2019t really pay a whole lot of attention to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guerrero got worried when his mother started showing symptoms, and he began making longer visits to see her in Mexico City. Guerrero stores her pills in plastic bins, neatly labeled and stacked in one of his closets. On the patio, Guerrero\u2019s husband Michael Street keeps a lush garden where Castillo enjoys some of her meals. The home is dotted with smart speakers and calendars, outlining the radio shows she likes to listen to. Street demonstrates how he can control the programming from his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery one of these are what radio station it\u2019s supposed to be on throughout the day, all in Spanish obviously, from different parts of the Latin speaking world,&#8221; Street says. &#8220;So she never has to be bored, no matter what room she\u2019s in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They also take Castillo\u00a0Rocha to weekly group activities where she socializes with other seniors. Tech Guerrero says that time is precious. This post shares their first day at a Dallas Arboretum program for people with early stage dementia and their caregivers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to hear lots of advice, but you have to filter it according to your own life status,&#8221; he says. &#8220;In our family, sense of humor is vital. It\u2019s paramount. So by every now and then, calling ourselves her dads. We\u2019re like the gay dads &#8230; Papa and Daddy or something, and she jokes about it constantly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since taking on this role, Guerrero has left his office job and is now freelancing, though he looks forward to going back to work full-time one day.<\/p>\n<h6>$470 Billion In Unpaid Labor<\/h6>\n<p>It&#8217;s a familiar trade-off for the estimated 41 million family caregivers across the country. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/content\/dam\/aarp\/ppi\/2019\/11\/valuing-the-invaluable-2019-update-charting-a-path-forward.doi.10.26419-2Fppi.00082.001.pdf\">recent report<\/a> from the AARP&#8217;s Public Policy Institute estimates that in 2017, they provided 34 billion hours of care to loved ones. That\u2019s $470 billion in unpaid labor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/content\/dam\/aarp\/ppi\/2019\/11\/family-caregivers-data-by-state.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-146 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/caregivers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/12\/economic-value-of-texas-caregivers-sidebar-2.png\" alt=\"The Economic Value Of Texas Caregivers.\" width=\"450\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stories.kera.org\/caregivers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/12\/economic-value-of-texas-caregivers-sidebar-2.png 450w, https:\/\/stories.kera.org\/caregivers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/12\/economic-value-of-texas-caregivers-sidebar-2-135x300.png 135w, https:\/\/stories.kera.org\/caregivers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/12\/economic-value-of-texas-caregivers-sidebar-2-300x667.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Caregiver\u2019s duties at first may be light, but overtime as the disease worsens, the caregiver, their duties can turn into 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week,&#8221; says Imelda Aguirre with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/dallasnetexas\">Dallas and Northeast Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer&#8217;s Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She says many people find themselves caregiving without proper training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, I mean the caregiver is really overwhelmed with not knowing where to go or what to do or what resources they have available,&#8221; Aguirre says.<\/p>\n<p>The Alzheimer\u2019s Association has a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/help-support\/resources\/helpline\"> 24-hour helpline<\/a>, as well<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/media\/Documents\/alzheimers-dementia-memory-loss-alzheimers-10-warning-signs-b.pdf\"> information on warning signs,<\/a> like mood changes and confusion with time or place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Alzheimer\u2019s Association recommends that if you are experiencing memory loss, that you see your primary care physician, and ask questions, but also to take the next steps and visit a neurologist,&#8221; Aguirre says.<\/p>\n<p>Work is underway to help America\u2019s caregivers. Last year, President Donald Trump signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/3759\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RAISE Family Caregivers Act<\/a> into law. It established a new <a href=\"https:\/\/acl.gov\/programs\/support-caregivers\/raise-family-caregiving-advisory-council\">advisory council<\/a> which has been working on a national strategy for caregivers, exploring issues like financial security and training \u2014 tools that could have helped Tech Guerrero and Michael Street find their way as caregivers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone&#8217;s in a similar boat in terms of daily challenges, but I would say be forgiving with yourself for the errors that you make,&#8221; Guerrero says. &#8220;Take notes every day, and try to simplify life where you can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><strong>NEXT &gt;&gt;<\/strong>Teachers and school counselors are often the first to notice when a student is struggling.\u00a0Ashley Williams, a counselor from Central Elementary School in Seagoville, shares in her own words how she set up a special locker where students can leave her private notes sharing their feelings. <a href=\"http:\/\/stories.kera.org\/caregivers\/2019\/12\/10\/letters-to-ms-williams-a-counselor-helps-students-share-their-feelings\/\">Read and listen to Ashley&#8217;s story.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Life changes when you take on caring for a parent.
