What They Brought

Some immigrants arrive in the United States on airplanes with suitcases stuffed with keepsakes. Others come across the Mexico border with whatever they can cram in their pockets.
As they leave their homelands for a new land, they all carry memories from home.
Here’s a look at what some of the students profiled in American Graduate: Generation One – and their families – brought with them.

Dilcia M. Asencio Mazariegos

Dilcia, who’s from Guatemala, made it across the U.S.-Mexico border aboard an inflatable raft on the Rio Grande.
